Southern Girl Up North was born from a deep-rooted need to help others.

In 2011, my husband’s job relocated us from Dallas, TX to Maple Grove, MN. While I was excited for the adventure, I was now 1000 miles away from my twin sister. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when we were 28 years old and I was very involved in her medical plan. Being out of state meant I couldn’t take her to doctor visits, run daily errands for her, etc.

After a lot of time on my knees in prayer, I opened my Etsy shop and decided to donate the proceeds of my sales to her fight against MS. Spoiler alert! She is in remission and doing great!

My focus shifted several years ago when I lost my mother to cancer. My mother spent hours in freezing cold treatment rooms fighting through chemotherapy. It was during this time that I learned how to hand-knit chunky yarn blankets. At the time, I didn’t know why I was so focused on blankets but it soon became clear…. God’s timing is perfect!

When we moved to Nisswa, MN this summer, everything seemed to fall into place. I felt God’s nudge to pass some warmth along to those fighting their own cancer battles in freezing cold rooms. I am so excited to use a portion of the proceeds from each blanket goes toward creating and donating blankets to our local cancer center!
